Great Game, but More SciFi-Action Than Horror Oriented

The next installment of Dead Space (DS) is here and you play again as the mentally disturbed, titular engineer known as Isaac Clarke. The setting begins on the EarthGov colony located on Earth's moon, and Isaac's journey is about to become worse than the last two games; not only are there more Necromorphs becoming reanimated by Marker conduits but the Unitologist armies view Isaac Clarke as a heretic and a threat to "humanity becoming whole" and he must be killed.

The story for Dead Space 3 (DS3) is pretty self-explanatory; following 200 years after an event on an icy Tau Volantis, Isaac was rescued by Ellie prior the main events of the story, but due to his mentally-disturbed psyche and the fact that he cannot stop running from his past he experiences a breakup with Ellie. In a matter of months, he is dragged in by John Carver and Cpt. Robert Norton to find her and her team that lost contact on the CMS Roanoke.

Story: The story is good, but in some areas the outcome can be quite predictable, and the ending of the game may indicate more content, and that's where the Awakened DLC comes in. That content brings the horror back effectively, but like the main campaign, it leaves unanswered questions.

Graphics: The graphics use myriad assets from its predecessor while introducing some new ones. I found the facial features to be of less quality than Dead Space 2 (DS2) because of possible time constraints--two years vs. three years of development for DS2.

Prior Players: Dead Space veterans who are fans of the survival-horror genre may be disappointed by the ammo system, rolling mechanic, and fighting human Unitologists. In a way, this game is more SciFi-action than horror oriented. Also, Isaac moves more fluidly than clunky in Dead Space 1, removing some of the tension.

Controversy: Micro-transactions have received some controversy. Ration seals are collected via scavenger bots in the game and may be used to redeem resources at a bench. Resources could also be purchased for real money. The problem is Ration Seals are exclusive to having an internet connection to EA's servers which may upset players who are unable to do so offline. This system is broken and should have made ration seals part of the game, regardless of connection or not.

Strong points: The only great parts about these games are the side missions, co-op included, and the Awakened DLC. These content pieces are gems in the rough that increase tension, horror, and difficulty. They will tear players apart without proper preparation and resources at their disposal. This is where Dead Space 3 shines in its survival-horror theme.

Overall, this is highly recommended for Dead Space players who want more variety and experimentation; combat, side missions, crafting, and co-op experience. For everyone else not welcome to these changes may not experience optimal satisfaction.
