RAGE is a groundbreaking first-person shooter set in the not-too-distant future after an asteroid impacts Earth, leaving a ravaged world behind. You emerge into this vast wasteland to discover humanity working to rebuild itself against such forces as bandit gangs, mutants, and the Authority – an oppressive government regime that has a special interest in you in particular. Featuring intense first-person shooter action, breakneck vehicle combat, an expansive world to explore and jaw-dropping graphics powered by id’s revolutionary id Tech 5 technology, RAGE promises an experience like no other.

Fearing a planet-wide extinction from a massive asteroid headed towards Earth, world leaders are faced with the inexorable task of ensuring human survival. Left with few alternatives, life-sustaining pods filled with select people are buried deep beneath the earth’s surface. You are one of the chosen members of these modern day arks and abruptly enter the RAGE universe after surfacing alone. Leaving you to your own devices to stay alive in a world filled with those who prefer you dead, RAGE combines powerful storytelling with heart-pounding action.

Key Features:

  • Visceral 1st-person gunplay and exploration – Take on bandit gangs and hordes of mutants using an arsenal of exotic weapons and special items, such as Wingsticks, personal turrets, sentry bots, and remote-controlled bomb cars.
  • Frenetic 3rd-person vehicular mayhem – Burn rubber across the wasteland in your very own super buggy! Upgrade and customize your car with special parts, paint jobs and weapons, then test your skills as you battle four-wheeling bandit clans and participate in deadly races.
  • An expansive experience – Beyond the first-person action and vehicle combat, RAGE offers a world open to explore, with unique characters, side quests, and a compelling storyline.
  • Graphics that have to be seen to be believed – Powered by id’s cutting-edge new id Tech® 5 engine, new Megatexture technology brings the vast wasteland to life in never-before- possible detail with action running at an astounding 60 frames per second.
  • Three ways to play for non-stop action - Immerse yourself in a rich single-player story, exclusive co-op modes, or intense on-line car combat.

I loved every second of Rage from start to finish, it feels like the love child of Borderlands and Fallout, taking the fast paced shooting and rubber burning races from Borderlands and the serious story-telling and deep post-apoc atmosphere of Fallout.

The game throws you into a post-apocalyptic world after an asteroid smashes into Earth causing world-wide extinction, leaving only those that were offered underground protection or those that survived through radiation induced mutation.

Everything about the game is fluid, it just feels good to do everything. It has just enough RPG elements to please heavy RPG fans and just enough breakneck action to please the hardcore FPS fans, not to mentioned enough exploration and loot collecting to please the few of us with medication worthy OCDs.

The racing and driving around in general is not half-arsed in the slightest. I'd say it even beat Borderlands and felt more like how you'd expect the perfect Mad Max game to feel. Now that a Mad Max game has come out, you can see where they got their inspiration from in terms of game design, as Rage always felt like the perfect Mad Max-esque game to me.

Despite how much love I have for Rage, is does has a negative... The ending, no spoilers but once you're done, you cannot continue to free-roam, the last save puts you right before the last mission and it put a horribly sour taste against what was up to that point, a flawless experience. There is something that resolves this though, and that's The Scorchers DLC which allows you to play past the last mission and continue to free-roam there after to complete side missions or find collectibles. This DLC isn't sold on Opium Pulses at time of writing but can be picked up on Steam for cheap.

TL;DR - This is a solid game with beautiful graphics, all the best bits from games like Borderlands and Fallout and an engaging storyline. If you like Mad Max, you'll like this game more. Loses half a star as only The Scorchers DLC fixes the lack of free-roam after base completion.
