Offroad Truck Simulator Review

There is something about truck simulator games that just resonates with me. I have around 300 hours in Euro Truck Simulator 2 and it just never gets boring to just turn on the radio, relax and drive around Europe hauling cargo. However, games like Mudrunner and Snowrunner had an opposite effect where I was constantly feeling stressed out because I would get stuck in terrain and had to use one of the hundred features to get unstuck and finish a mission. Offroad Truck Simulator walks (or should I say drives) a fine line between the two simulators. On the one hand you have the relaxing driving around Utah or Poland in a semi open world map delivering different cargo and getting money. On the other hand, it kind of keeps with the offroad there because you will get stuck in certain places, and you might get lost trying to figure out how to get to a certain delivery point, but at least the game is not forcing you to use a million different tools that are best for certain situations.

You have your normal movement keys and leaning keys, but you also have the four buttons that switch the axles to either road drive which is front wheel only, all wheel drives, back axles locked and all axles locked. Basically, if you're stuck, turn on the all axles locked and nine out of ten times you'll get out of it. The leaning mechanic also helped in certain situations where there was a tight fit between some rocks or a parking lot full of cars, but that's only if you want to drive entirely in first person, which felt weird in certain scenarios because the third person camera just felt better.

The missions have the same feeling as a CaRP mod in BeamNG, which have a weirdly addictive loop. Go to a place to put a trailer on, go to a place to pick up cargo, pick it up and drive to the delivery point and then go back to where you picked up the trailer. It seems simple enough but the fun comes in the route planning. Since there's no map or minimap to help you out, all you can rely on is exploring. For now there are 2 locations in the game as mentioned before - Utah and Poland and each one has around 10 different deliveries with more to come in future updates. There is also 2 different modes except for the delivery one, and it's exploration mode where you're just thrown in a map and you can drive around and familiarize the environment and a truck race mode, which is basically a time trial on short tracks ranging from 1-2 minutes with a lot of weird terrain to overcome. I didn't really enjoy the two modes as much as the delivery one so most of my playtime was on cargo hauling.

Now, the best part about the whole game - the actual trucks. There is a good amount of them and they come in three categories 2-axle, 3-axle and 4-axle trucks with slight upgrading capabilites with the money you earn from missions. It also features real truck brands like Mercedes, Unimog, MAN, Hummer etc. and each of them actually feels different to drive and they each come with their unique interiors. The most fun I had was collecting money to buy all the different trucks and upgrading them to max so there is a really addictive loop there too which adds to the reason why you're doing all the cargo missions.

The thing that isn't really that good about the game is the actual length of it and the optimization. You get pretty bored really fast, I unlocked all the trucks and finished all the cargo missions in less then 8 hours and I felt there was nothing left for me to do. One way they could fix this is maybe adding a random missions feature in which you're constantly driving around the map, maybe some increased challenge the longer you go. It really needs something to keep players playing for longer because I really do see a future for this game.
