Midnight Heist Review

Developer & Publisher - MediaTale

Go on heists through Midnight City alone or with up to three friends to fulfil tasks as a hacker for various organizations.

Improve your reputation, earn money and uncover the secrets of shady companies in this co-op horror game.

It's a game that is like Phasmophobia, but not quite the same at all.

MediaTale brings you Midnight Heist where you must hack computers, find documents, and find collectables to improve your cash flow or sell special items to the Black Market.

There is only one thing stopping you from making this a breeze, an entity of unknown origin hunts you.

With a positive review rate on Steam, you can be sure to be in for a thrill, you could even play with up to 4 of your friends in this dark hacking adventure.

Gameplay

I would recommend playing the quick tutorial before you think about taking on any of the 2 basic large maps that Midnight Heist has to offer for the time being, the reason is, that it can be confusing on objectives.

Since the game is in Early Access, there are not many maps or objectives available to you, but rest assured, since I downloaded this game a week or so ago, I've had quite a few updates, so they are at least working on it!

You can play either single-player or multiplayer, but unless you have some friends, I wouldn't hold out trying multiplayer, I swear I waited 30 minutes, and still no one wanted to join, which I assume means that the player base has not yet grown to that point.

During the single-player experience, you will have to go around a fairly large map with 3 floors by yourself, I haven't figured out what the main objective is, but what I can say is that you can do a variety of tasks while trying to figure it out.

For tasks, there are several;

Hack Laptops and PCs, search for Documents in drawers and cabinets, find and break open safes, find collectables that can be sold on the black market, find cash and phones that can be sold, hack security cameras and finally, take photos of illegal activities as evidence, this includes finding drugs, money printing, tools for burglary etc.

While you attempt to do all of the above, be aware of your surroundings as you are not alone, an entity of an unknown nature lurks in the corridors and can pop out at any moment, luckily, there are places to hide.

I spoke about different tasks, and to complete these tasks, you are given 3 items;

A flashlight with an attached UV light that can see ghostly prints and safe codes, a phone that can hack cameras and electronics for doors, laptops and PCs with a camera app for evidence taking and lastly, a tablet where you can view all of your hacked security camera footage which helps track the entity.

When hacking the PCs, there are a variety of different puzzles that need to be completed before the hacking is considered complete, these could range from; doing quick maths in the form of coding, matching the tiles, adjusting meters correctly and so on, and to note, you can not hack more than one thing at a time, it's a shame really since you are on your own and all.

Along with all this, you can customise your character cosmetics with one of the 4 available avatars, and change how your items look with the early access shop, the currency needed is in-game cash that you collect during a run.

I found the game to be hard, even at the beginner level, it might be because I didn't know what I was doing half the time but all of my runs ended in failure, from either being caught or simply leaving in the van, it's not clear on what objective is needed to pass the mission, unless Im just blind...

For me, the sound quality is great, but sometimes suspicious as I hear the entity upstairs but it's actually behind me, so maybe the sound cues are a bit broken, but graphical speaking, it's amazing, and the detail of the entity itself is visually appealing. You can really tell when the entity is close by when your flashlight or surrounding lights are flickering, it brings a sense of dread.

Final Thoughts

To be fair, I thought the game might have had more reception as I thought it could have been fun to play with others, which was a letdown.

It is a very interesting concept, a mix of Phasmophobia and Thief Simulator, and it doesn't run badly, it looks great and runs like a dream, there is much that can be done to improve though, like a skill tree!

Imagine a specialised skill tree for each of the 4 characters. That would be super cool in my opinion.

While they all would have the basic skill set, one could specialise in hacking quickly, whilst another might be able to see documents easier through walls at a certain range, another could see highlights of valuables easier, and the last could have a higher price for selling on the black market.

Or they could all have the same skill tree kind of like Dead by Daylight with a variety of unlockable perks, who knows, either way, Im excited to see where this game leads.

Rating

I would have to rate it a 4.

The reason behind it is simply because I can't see the objective behind each mission, and the lack of people playing.

(5 being the absolute best)
