Is this Game Trying to Kill Me? Review
img

It’s time for a mix of horror and first-person puzzle with the original and interesting title Is this Game Trying to Kill Me? developed and published by Stately Snail, and released on 13 November 2024.
Personally, I love puzzle games, so escape rooms and horror in one? Why not give it a try, right? So when I found the game, I felt like instantly playing it. It didn't really look like horror based on what I could see on Steam, but I still thought it looked interesting. I'm here for the puzzles, after all and I like to think a bit sometimes, especially after some action game, it's nice to chill with an escape room.

To be honest... it wasn't horror at all, not for me at least. I personally thought it was more of a comedy and I found it funny at first, especially when the first "scary" thing appeared on screen and started talking in a comedic way. It wasn’t interested in killing me or scaring me either, so if you're worried the game is too scary for you, then no, it's not at all.

So in short: you're stuck in a cabin somewhere deep in the forest, and the strange "scary" guy who owns it offers you a deal: play a computer game, and maybe you’ll earn your way out. It sounds simple, right? But it turns out the game and the cabin are way more connected than they first seem. Stuff from the game starts showing up around you, and the things you do in the cabin mess with the game itself.

The puzzles were easy for me, nothing too challenging, maybe sometimes only, but as long as you pay attention to your surroundings and the "computer game" you should be fine and if you get stuck at any point, there’s a hint system, which is basically just pictures showing what you have to do or where, so not a real answer, just a hint, a real hint.

To be honest, I felt disappointed. Most of the things were happening on the computer game, you moved around the cabin sometimes, but still, everything was happening on the computer. Maybe it's just not for me and I didn’t feel it. I was really trying, but the game felt like playing a game inside of a game and when I play an escape room, I expect something different, maybe more exploring around and looking for a solution? Not just going from one room to throw wood into a fireplace and then back to the computer.

After you put your wood into the fireplace, there is nothing to light the fire. Like seriously? There was fire everywhere, candles, and in your computer game there were torches, lots of them, but you still had to go into your computer to find some fire and light up the fireplace. I just didn’t feel it. I have finished so many escape rooms, so maybe I expected something else… but not this. Hard to tell, It felt off the whole time.

There’s even some fishing, which was a nice thing, still inside the computer, of course, but not bad. Still, I lost interest after about an hour and the game is pretty short, maybe two to three hours total, but I really just didn’t feel like finishing it.

I guess the biggest thing people might be worried about are the spiders. If you're scared of them, they do show up in one room, and yeah... they might jump at you. But here’s the good news, you can smash them with a rock! Honestly, they’re kinda cute tho...

Even if I can't recommend the game myself, because I didn't like it at all, I can't say the game is bad. Not at all. I'm pretty sure people might love it and its style, and I truly understand why. But it's just not for me, happens, right? No one to blame here, that's just how I am. I can still appreciate the idea though and the game has really positive reviews on Steam, so the reality is you should try it yourself and decide if it's your thing.
