Survival horror with friends? Yeah, why not!?
Devour isn’t exactly new you might’ve heard of it already. It was developed and published by Straight Back Games and first released on January 28, 2021, but since then, quite a few things have changed.
They have added a VR mode, which sounds nice actually, though I haven’t tried it myself. What I did play was the regular co-op mode with some friends. There are new maps now, which is great, back when I first played, there were only around four, so more variety was definitely needed, I first played and they have introduced new characters and other updates that make the experience feel more complete.
Of course, the game also has a solo mode, but I would say it is much harder and definitely less fun to play alone. I believe Devour was meant to be played with friends. You can invite up to three other people, which feels pretty standard. Even playing with just one other person works well, and that is what I did.
Now, going back to the beginning, there are four difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Nightmare. There is also a modified experience for solo players, which makes things a bit more manageable. The game tries to be fair for solo players, which is a nice touch, but I still think it was not really designed for solo play. Each difficulty level not only makes the gameplay more intense but also gives you more XP. You can use XP to level up all the way to 666, which is kind of funny, and unlock new cosmetics like outfits, skins, and visual upgrades for your characters, which is always a nice thing, right?
The main point of the game is that you and up to three other players are cult members trying to stop a possessed leader from summoning the demon Azazel. Each map has its own ritual, and your goal is to complete your own ritual to banish the entity before it becomes too strong. Depending on the map, you're looking for "ritual items" these can be goats, rats, eggs, etc. You need to collect keys to unlock new doors and access different areas. You also have a UV flashlight to stun enemies, but it has limited power and needs to recharge, so it's better to stay sneaky.
Once you have found your items, you need to go to a specific place and sacrifice them, like the goats mentioned earlier! All of this might sound easy, but is it? Actually, not really, because as you start to make progress, the game keeps getting harder and harder. More enemies spawn, and the main demon becomes faster, which makes it even more fun!
Throughout the map, you’ll find medkits, which are a crucial part of the game. They allow you to revive your teammates, but they’re also limited, which makes things even more challenging. Additionally, reviving someone isn’t always safe. you might have to sneak past the demon or clear out enemies first. When a teammate gets downed, they’re dragged away by the demon and left somewhere on the map, crawling and unable to help. There isn’t really a strict time limit to revive your teammates, but the longer they stay down, the more dangerous things get. As the game progresses, the demon becomes stronger and more aggressive, so having your friends helping you is important! Remember to revive them and be a good friend!
It's a survival horror, so You’ll hear distant whispers and footsteps, They are also audio cues, which warning you when the demon is near, for me it's not scary, but it is decent survival horror and visually the game looks pretty nice too. Nightmare mode is really hard. There’s no UV recharge, so you need to find batteries to keep your flashlight working. There are fewer medkits and ritual items too, which makes everything more difficult and if you and your friends keep dying too often, I don’t think you’re going to make it to the end. Enemies also become more aggressive, so it’s best to try to stay alive as long as you can to avoid wasting your resources.
If you’re looking to have some fun with friends, I can totally recommend the game. You probably won’t play it for too long andat some point, it might start to feel repetitive or boring, but until then, It’s definitely worth checking out all the maps and experimenting with the different difficulty levels. The game isn’t expensive, which makes it even more accessible, and the fact that you can play in VR makes it even better and more fun with friends!
